Minn Kota CoPilot Review 2

Minn Kota CoPilot review updated for 2018 Leave a comment

Oh, imagine the neighbor’s envy. Your boat is riding against the wind, all by itself, as you masterfully win the battle with a huge fish. After that sight, there’s no coming back. You might as well be crowned king of the county. How do we get there? Well, one of Minn Kota CoPilot systems definitely might do the trick. Which is exactly why we decided to go on a quest of our own and write this Minn Kota CoPilot review – updated for 2018.

There are several options, and we’ll get into each one. For starters, your choice is dependent on your budget, type of fishing, type of lake, level of autonomy and other factors. One example is fishing at the Big Muskego lake. Fishing there is done tight to the various bogs you will have more movement on the trolling motor. And naturally, you may want to have your hands free for casting into those tight pockets.

If you are interested in only the Minn Kota CoPilot review of remote controlling accessory (remote and the mount/receiver), then scroll to the bottom. I first wanted to review the entire system with the trolling motor and the advanced i-Pilot Link option.

First, we’ll start with Minn Kota Terrova

The Minn Kota Terrova is a fresh-water bow mount trolling motor. I’ve read dozens of reviews of the Minn Kota Terrova, and decided to create one myself.

There are several models to chose from Terrova Bow-Mount Motors with i-Pilot Link, Terrova Bow-Mount Motors with i-Pilot and Terrova Bow-Mount Motors. Available shaft lengths are from 45″ up to 72″. Are you looking to purchase any of these three systems? Then have in mind that the functionality is different with i-Pilot Link, with i-Pilot, and only with Bow-Mount Motors. For example, if you need automatic boat control you need the i-Pilot.

Min Kota Terrova functionalities

Terrova’s lift-assist design, so you don’t have to lift a finger to put the trolling motor in the water. The new redesigned Stow/Deploy lever is now even easier to use. Just press down when you want to move. The i-Pilot with link model, in particular, gives the option of precise control from any position on the boat. Everybody knows your hands are busy, so you will be happy to hear that Minn Kota Terrova i-Pilot with Link model has the new Spot-Lock button that allows holding your fishing spot immediately from the foot pedal! The new motor is even quieter than before with a universal sonar. Now you have a better view of what’s below, and the fish don’t get startled. For a full list of features check the Minn Kota website (which you probably already have). Purchased brand new, comes with a 2-year warranty.

User comment:
It’s nice to be able to have someone else control the boat if needed. I always stand in the front and work the pedal, but if I hook into a nice fish, my buddy from the back can override the pedal and take control of the boat with the remote.

This is a top of the line product so be prepared to shell out some serious cash. Saving a few bucks is always nice so you can ask the manufacturer for a discount, but then you may not get the model that you really want. Also, you may find some refurbished models that are sometimes like brand new, but be careful because we found reviews where buyers weren’t satisfied afterward.

Up next, Minn Kota Ulterra

Now let’s look at the Minn Kota Ulterra. It’s a freshwater bow-mount. As the moto goes, never touch your motor again, unless you wanna high five it. Like when you catch a large bass. In the video below you can see the Stow/Deploy, trim (up and down) features and the new foot pedal in action. With those features, you only have to decide if you want the power of GPS to be on your side. Get the i-Pilot or i-Pilot link and anchor your boat to an exact location! Besides, wouldn’t it be nice to sit down and control the boat with a remote? Or instead of sitting or dragging a foot pedal around the boat (which will probably tangle while you’re pulling one in) remote lets you control your troller from everywhere onboard.

User comment:
I bought this for my husband for his birthday and he absolutely loves it! Not only does it have the remote stow but he really enjoys the anchor feature. It keeps the boat in place, even in the wind. Not only does he love it, I do too! I no longer worry about him leaning over the front of the boat putting the trolling motor in the water and taking it out!

What about Minn Kota Ulterra Functionalities?

This product has fantastic design, it is very durable, it just works and it comes highly recommended by fishers. The Minn Kota Ulterra has most of the functionality as the Minn Kota Terrova. However, the thrust, volts, and shaft length options are different. For example, while the Minn Kota Terrova has a 12 volts options, the Ulterra has only 24 or 36 options. On the other hand, Minn Kota Ulterra has several options with 45″ shaft length. The Minn Kota Terrova 11 models, only 3 have this option. Another difference is the thrust. Want a lower one? You can find it with Terrova (55). Ulterra has only 80 and 112 options.

As for the other functionalities, as the Minn Kota Terrova, the Ulterra model has a lift-assist design, stow/deploy lever, quieter steering motor, universal Sonar 2, autopilot, i-Pilot, i-Pilot link and the Terrova foot pedal. Not a typo, Minn Kota Terrova, and Minn Kota Ulterra both use the same foot pedal. Purchased brand new, comes with a 2-year warranty.

The CoPilot is easy to install, and even easier to use. Depending on your skills and adaptability it might take a while to become a true master, but the remote itself is very simple. You can control the speed, the steer, deployment of the motor and other additional features depending on the model you purchase (i-Pilot, i-Pilot link). To avoid any struggling with the remote, use the i-Pilot option. The remote itself is waterproof, and it floats.

How about the Minn Kota CoPilot review?

Let’s start with one user’s Minn Kota CoPilot review that will definitely spark your interest and make you laugh!

User comment:
The day I got the Minn Kota CoPilot me and my dad were going fishing. I didn’t tell him about the new installation, and just laughed as he was freaking out, thinking the boat is going to get away. With a click of a button, the boat came back. If you love cracking up jokes, this one will reach a hall of fame.

In essence, what you get with this accessory is the remote control and the base on top of which you install the trolling motor and the pedal for controlling the motor. The company Minn Kota does not include the trolling motor, i-Pilot Link, the pedal itself in this offer. Still, it’s a great product with great reviews, and if some of the functionalities you don’t need (or already own), then this is the perfect choice for you.

When you are fishing with a friend, and one of you catches one, the other can play with the remote and share the experience. Or, when you are riding solo, you can strap the remote around your neck, and it will quickly become one of the handiest gadgets you add to your boat. Just the sheer possibility of a remote control and adjusting speed and direction will make you highly efficient.
